Abstract

  Background: Food Allergy is an issue of public health concern since it triggers life-threatening reactions, and had an adverse immune reaction to a food allergen, mainly of protein nature. Aim of the study: This study was conducted to assess guardians’ awareness regarding care for primary school children with food allergy. Research Design: A descriptive research design was utilized to conduct this study. Setting: The present study was conducted at the Allergy, Immunology and Rheumatology Clinic in Children's Hospital, Ain Shams University which the children following up for their food allergy, because there wasn't specialized clinic for children’s food allergies in Banha. Sample type: Convenience sample was used in this study. Tools of data collection: One tool was used, A structured interviewing questionnaire to assess; A: Socio demographic characteristics of guardians and child personal characteristics, B: Health problem associated with food allergy, C: Family history of food allergy, D: knowledge of guardians about food allergy, E: reported practices of guardians regarding food allergy. Results: 75.0% of studied children had itching, it considered the most common presenting manifestation of food allergy, 13.5% of studied guardians had good knowledge about food allergies, 47.5% of studied guardians had satisfactory practices, Conclusion: The study concluded that there were statistically significant relation related to age and educational level between total reported practices and demographic characteristics (p <0.005), of studied guardians, there were statistically significant relation related to educational level between total knowledge and demographic characteristics of studied guardians. Recommendations: Develop and implement educational programs to increase guardians’ awareness regarding care for primary school children with food allergy.
