Application of Roy's Adaptation Model on Women's Satisfaction after Mastectomy.

Abstract

Background: Mastectomy is the most prevalent surgical treatment for breast cancer that impacts women's adaptation and satisfaction. Aim of the study: Was to evaluate the effect of application of Roy's adaptation model on women's satisfaction after mastectomy. Research design: A quasi – experimental design was utilized in this study. Setting: This study was conducted at Oncology Outpatient Clinic at Health Insurance Hospital in Benha, Benha University Hospital and followed by home visits. The sample: A purposive sample was utilized and involved 90 women after mastectomy. Tools: Four tools were used I): A structured interviewing questionnaire which consisted of 3 parts to assess a): Demographic characteristics of post mastectomy women b): Medical history of women c): Women's knowledge regarding breast cancer and mastectomy, II): Observational checklist which consisted of 2 parts to assess a): Women's practices after mastectomy b) Women's home environment. III): Roy's adaptation model to assess the adaptation level of women after mastectomy. IV): Women's satisfaction scale to assess satisfaction of women after mastectomy. Results: 45.6% of the studied women aged 50 and more years with mean age 52.25±10.67 years and 80.0% of them were married while 12.2% of the studied women had good knowledge pre application of Roy's adaptation model which increased to 66.7%, 65.6% post application and at follow up phase respectively while 23.3% of the studied women had satisfactory practices pre application that improved to 77.8%, 75.6% post application and at follow up phase respectively and 14.4% of the studied women had high adaptation level before application which improved to 63.3%, 71.1% post application and at follow up phase respectively. Conclusion: Application of Roy's adaptation model had positive effect on improvement of women's total satisfaction after mastectomy. Recommendation: Continuous application of Roy's adaptation model for women after mastectomy to enhance women's adaptation level and satisfaction.
