Effect of Training Program about Lean Strategies for Head Nurses on Their Leadership Effectiveness

Abstract

 Background: Currently, healthcare organizations work in a very competitive environment,
which requires organizations to be flexible and acquire knowledge, technologies and processes to
introduce new services, decrease costs and act faster than competitors. Lean strategies, therefore,
have been necessary for healthcare organizations to produce quality, efficiency and improving
leadership effectiveness.
Aim: The study aimed to assess the effect of training program about lean
strategies for head nurses on their leadership effectiveness.
Design: A quasi-experimental design
was utilized.
Setting: In all units at medical and surgical departments at Benha University
Hospital.
Subjects: All available 55 head nurses. Tools for data collection: Three tools were
used for data collection; Lean strategies knowledge questionnaire, Head nurses lean performance
observation checklist and Leadership effectiveness questionnaire.
Results: That there was highly
statistically significant correlation between pre¸ post program & pre¸ follow up program regarding
head nurses knowledge¸ performance regarding lean strategies and leadership effectiveness.
Conclusion: There was an improvement in the head nurses knowledge and performance regarding
lean strategies after the implementation of the program and there was positive effect on their
leadership effectiveness. Also¸ there was a highly statistically significant improvement of
leadership effectiveness after program implementation.
Recommendations: Demonstrate a strong
orientation toward lean and its strategies, which is clearly communicated and enacted, from the
highest levels of management, throughout the hospital.
